Our Story

"In a market where throws and cushions are often an afterthought and seen as just another product to sell, Erik set about sourcing the finest fabrics and quality manufacturing to create a unique, high-quality and beautiful range for every budget"

At the Original Cushion Cº we’re passionate about beautiful fabrics and how to bring them into the home to create that finishing layer of design, colour and comfort.

Our founder, Erik Karlsen, made his name for design as one of the founders of Jane Churchill, the fabric and wallpaper brand, and has gone on to creating interior designs around the world for high end clients. Over the years, he became frustrated with being unable to find beautiful ready-made cushions and at the cost of making bespoke designer cushions.

In a market where throws and cushions are often an afterthought and seen as just another product to sell, Erik set about sourcing the finest fabrics and quality manufacturing to create a unique, high-quality and beautiful range for every budget.

All our pieces are finished and manufactured to the highest standards, with fabrics that are of the right thickness to keep their form and last a lifetime, while being tactile and inviting. Our cushions are a more generous size than average and our pads are made to ensure comfort and support and fill the cushion to give them just the right amount of plumpness. Our throws are designed to complement our cushion range and are made in thicknesses for every season.

We are first and foremost about the fabric, and add new cushions and throws as we fall in love with fabrics in our constant quest to bring you the very finest products to finish your rooms.

The Perfect Cushion

After years of commissioning bespoke designer cushions, we think we've found the recipe for the perfect cushion

  1. The right fabric - we only choose fabrics that we love and that we hope will make your home beautiful. Beauty isn't enough though, the fabrics need to be both durable and comfortable.

  2. The right size - all our cushions are above average size, as we think there's nothing worse than a mean cushion.

  3. Comfortable and durable fabrics - we manufacture to the very highest standards of quality, to ensure that your cushion looks immaculate and lasts. Our embroidered cushions, for example, are made with short stitches and thicker thread to stop snagging.

  4. Exquisite finishing - all our cushions are made with piping. The piping exquisitely frame the fabric and adds interest. It also gives the cushion stronger seams and adds structure to ensure the cushion keep its shape better.

Looking after your cushions

Never beat a feather cushion!

Feather cushions can be kept good as new if looked after properly - here's how:

Everyone loves a wonderfully plump cushion - it invites you to throw yourself into it, and slowly sink in. However, many of us may be surprised to learn that there's a right way and a wrong way to plump a cushion.

Almost all of us beat cushions. It is quick and easy, and probably the only way we know to bring back plumpness. There are two things wrong with beating, however.

Firstly, it's difficult to get an even plumpness, and often there's a sort of punch mark left somewhere. This is even more problematic when you're trying to make a bank of cushions look uniform.

Secondly, beating will damage the feathers over time. Each time you give a cushion a good punch, you risk snapping the hollow feather shaft (the calamus) and eventually also breaking the spine of the feather (the rachis). Over the years the pillow filling will lose its volume and eventually you'll end up with the crumbled feathers creating a cloud of dust every time you beat it.

So what's the right way to plump? Simply follow our six step guide - after you give it a go once, we're sure you'll be convinced!

This way of plumping is more gentle, where gravity ensures that the feathers resettle and air evenly fills the pillow.  The end result is greater volume, an even and perfectly shaped cushion, and a longer lasting pillow.
